Cinco de Mayo

5/1/2019 (Permalink)

Cinco de Mayo ‘Fifth of May’ is also known as the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla. During the French-Mexican war, an outnumbered Mexican army conquered the powerful invading French. It was a great victory, demonstrating Mexico’s capability to protect and preserve its sovereignty against a dominant nation.

Confident in their ability, General Charles de Lorencez rounded up 6,000 French troops and set out to attack Puebla. On the fifth of May, Lorencez gathered his army and began the attack. It lasted only from daybreak to early evening. After realizing he lost over 500 men, and less than 100 Mexican troops were killed, he withdrew his defeated army. This day is highly celebrated in the state of Puebla. They have parades, give speeches and have reenactments of the 1862 battle. In the mid-20th century; in the United States, the celebration of Cinco de Mayo became a way for Mexican immigrants to encourage pride in their Mexican Heritage.
